As some of you might know, I love to collect all kinds of white animal figurines. This morning I discovered Sophie Woodrow. I adore how her animals are so magical looking and the black hollow eyes make me think of ancient greek masks.
for more reading, here is a lovely interview with Sophie.
Also, I’d imagine these rugs are really soft too.
I’ve always totally loved looking back through archives of early fashion illustration. Some good sources: The Smithsonian’s archive of Parisian Costume Illustration from 1912-1914.
or artofile which has an extensive library of art deco pochoir artists- some of which are for sale.
One day i want to get one of these prints and frame it…
This morning I brought in a copy of a 1962 National Geographic for a coworker to use as a reference. It was such a nice thing to read through on the way to work. I learned all about these birds in Guinea called Hoatzin which have claws at the ends of their wings when they are young and then I read about early american naive painters. I really think I enjoy magazines from the past more than the ones that are current because you see the world frozen in another time. Another amazing resource are the archives of L’Officiel de la Mode. Back when I was a student at FIT I could spend hours on here pulling images and one time I even scored back issues the library was throwing away from the 1980s.
When something traumatic or just bad happens to me it hurts but it also ignites something in me that makes the good things feel even more intense too. instead of just being flat all the time.
I totally love the randomness that I come across on pinterest. this morning, i learned about this textile museum in greenpoint, brooklyn which specializes in antique Japanese folk textiles. Most of the collection is available for purchase. They have an exhibit up in portland right now at the japanese garden and it explores the japanese concept of mottainai which means waste nothing.
i love how these satellite images are made to look like persian rugs.
